its a class project. its going to charge the battereys for our robots. i would just like some information if anyone has some ideas. logistics/ construction/wire size and type stuff like that.

Buy the solar array itself, you can’t build these any more than you can build a transistor.

You basically need a large flat panel that tilts. Easiest is to use a motor and clock so the angle changes per time of day. Remember it has to be in a place facing south, with no shade and an unobstructed view of the sky from straight up down to the horizon to the south, or as close to the horizon as you can get. That’s for a one axis tracking system. A more elaborate system will track SE to SW as the sun rises and sets, as well as NS for the changing seasons.

A system might track E to W or SE to SW automatically and have the NS setting done manually, as this setting need be changed only every week or so.

what are the negatives of wind turbines and solar panels?

They're not bad at all, they're just not all that great.

Solar panels are woefully inefficient, and still quite expensive given their yield. Wind turbines are similar, in that the output they produce is quite low, considering how much space they take up (and the noise), because you need loads of them to generate a decent amount of power.

That doesn't mean they're actively bad, it just means they have a little way to go before they're going to be a viable mainstream choice. That's particularly true of solar panels.

I wish to build a solar panel for domestic i.e. in the absence of electricity the same can be used to run fan, tv, computer if not A/c and refrig. How to do the same and what will be the cost involved?

Solar panel cannot be built at home…But you can of course buy one. Also if its your hobby and you are doing it just for fun, then forget it. Solar panels are very expensive and a small panel with an output of 1.5V will cost you around 15-20 AUD. Imagine how many you need to run a 240V fan. Also there are large commercially sold solar panels and you can get a GOVT. rebate (check website) if you buy from GOVT. registered resellers. You can get upto $8000 rebate. This is very expensive stuff to buy as you need batteries and a new electricity back up system installed at your place. BUT once installed with a very little maintenance, you can enjoy the benefits.

I am confused over this issue.

There are multiple companies selling information on how to make them for cheap, but I do not know which one is the best.

I hear mixed reviews some saying these homemade ones are just as good as the professional and others saying they will not produce the same power or will break easy or not be legal to hook to the grid and other various things.

I also am not sure if you really can make them for cheap because I think you might still need to buy energy converters or other ect.

So I hope someone here can give me an objective answers from real knowledge or experience and give reasons and not just answers so that I can see for myself thanks!!!

Well if you are doing a direct comparison (i.e. power output per panel), homemade solar panels are not as good as professional one's, the materials used to make the panels themselves absorb much more energy over its surface area in a professionally made panel.

Having said that you can get good benefits from home made solar panels, once you have made one you only need to make another to increase the amount of power produced. The home made solar panel is allot cheaper to purchase, you could make 20 home made panels for the price of one production panel.

My hubby is a DIY nut and he has assembled and implemented two of these now, we use the energy produced more to supplement our power usage, he estimates we will save around 40% (we are pretty conservative with our energy usage though)

When you ask, will they break easy, that probably is more dependant on the workmanship of the handyman putting it together.

We have 50$ for a science project, and we deciedid to make a functional solar pannel. How to do this?

Hmm, I answered a very similar question to this one a little bit ago "How can i build a solar panel?". It was asked a few hours after your question, though.

Anyway, I will take my response from that question and tailor it to your needs (the other question concerned a small solar car to be entered in a science fair).

So, if you want to build your own solar panel that looks like what you see on buildings, etc, you will probably need to be a multi-millionaire. Here is a quote from the first link in my sources list:

"The high-efficiency solar cells you can buy at Radio Shack and other stores are made from highly processed silicon, and require huge factories, high temperatures, vacuum equipment, and lots of money."

But fortunately for you, there is a cheap way to make a solar panel yourself (see link). I love the scitoys website, but I am not quite familiar with this particular experiment. After glancing over it a bit, I would say not to expect any appreciable power out of this panel (so as the site says, no lighting up any bulbs).

But, you should be able to measure the voltage output easily with a voltmeter and be able to detect different voltages at different levels of sunlight. Also, you can probably improve on the design.
